You’re all packed and ready to hit the open road with Fido and Fluffy for your next travel adventure. Practicing some common sense rules of the road will help ensure that your precious pet has a happy and safe trip.

No heads out the window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous.

Frequent pit stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break…and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

Proper hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

Watch the food intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending).

Don’t leave them alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

Practice restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness or travel kennel are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet.

Safe and comfortable: Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy.

Pet friendly accommodations etiquette: If your journey’s itinerary requires an overnight stay along the way at a pet friendly accommodation, there are a number of tips to consider.

- Get a ground floor room to make bathroom runs easier.

- At check-in, inquire about areas to walk your pet.

- Cover any furniture and beds your pet will be allowed on.

- Place litter boxes in the bathroom to make clean up easier

- Avoid leaving your pet alone in the room. Even the best behaved pets can bark and become destructive when in a new environment. If your plans require you to stay for a longer period of time, inquire about local pet sitters or pet day care. If your pet’s demeanor is such that you are able to leave them alone for a short period of time, be sure to alert the front desk. It also may help to put the tv or radio on to keep your pet comfortable, and place a note on your door indicating that your precious pet is inside.

- Always keep your pet on a leash and refrain from taking them into the lodging dining areas.

- And of course…always clean up after your pet after bathroom runs

Following some basic rules during road travel will help to make your journey with your little one much more enjoyable and safe!

There are a range of dog travel items that you can use to facilitate traveling with your pet, and make the journey enjoyable for both dog owner and dog. With the right dog travel items, you can keep your dog safe, comfortable and entertained, protect your car from damage and make the entire road trip a very memorable one.

The first item to pack is a dog blanket. This may be used to keep your dog warm at night or when travelling in cold weather, and can also serve as a comfortable cushion for your dog to lie down on the floor or seat. A seat cover will also protect your upholstery from damage due to spills, dog waste, muddy paws, dog hair, dander and scratching claws. Select a dog seat cover with added cushioning to make it even more comfortable for your dog.

A dog car seat belt will help keep your dog in the backseat of your car such that they don’t try to get into your lap as you drive. This will also protect them in the event that you get into an accident, crash, swerve or stop abruptly. If your dog weighs less than 30 pounds, you may consider using a comfortable dog car seat along with the dog seat belt to keep them safe while driving. If your dog is a large breed or is older, you may find steps and ramps useful in enabling them to get into vehicles such as SUVs or vans.

Have a great trip!

A good dog travel bowl will also come in handy in helping you to keep your dog well hydrated during your journey. The K9 Travel Mug is ideal as it is made from durable stainless steel, has a unique spill-resistant rim and space saving design which fits well into the cup holders of your car.

Taking your favorite pet on your next road trip? To make sure it’s as pleasant for your pet as it is for you try following these simple pet safety and comfort tips.

No Sticking Their Heads Out The Window: Although most pets will take great enjoyment from spending the entire road trip with their head out the window, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris from the road not to mention other cars. Along this same tip, I hope that it should go without mention that traveling with your pet in the back of the pickup truck is also a definite no-no! Some states even have laws restricting this type of animal transport because it is always dangerous.

Make Frequent Rest Stops: You should always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas and public rest stops will have designated areas for walking your pet. When taking your pets on bathroom breaks or short walks, try to stick to this area, also remembering to bring a bag to pickup any waste. Whenever you are outside your vehicle, make sure to keep your pet on a leash and wearing a collar that has a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

Keep Them Hydrated: During your rest stops make sure to provide your pet with some fresh water so that they can re-hydrate themselves. Occasionally, traveling in a car can upset your pet’s stomach and keeping them hydrated will work to help prevent any ‘accidents.’ Another trick is to bring ice cubes for your pet as it’s easier than having to bring large amounts of water (plus by the time you’re done with the trip it IS just water).

Watch Their Food Intake: It is suggested that you keep feeding to a minimum while traveling. This also means feeding them their regular pet food and not whatever part of your fast-food that you didn’t finish. Pets and french fries, burgers or any other sort of fast-food item usually are not a good mix.

Don’t Leave Them Stranded: Never leave your pet by themselves in a parked vehicle. On average warm days, the temperature in your car can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even if you have the windows slightly open. Another reason to not leave them in the car is it sometimes can act as an open invitation to pet thieves.

Keep Them Restrained: Make sure that your pet is safely restrained while in your car. Using a pet safety-harness or travel kennel are the easiest ways to keep your pet safe. These will not only protect your pet from harm, but they also help by keeping them from distracting you while you are driving. A pet safety harness acts the same way as a regular seatbelt does. While your typical pet will not find any problems adjusting to it, you may want to let them test it out by wearing the harness by itself a few times before using it in the car. If your dog prefers a travel kennel, make sure that the kennel is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs or other cars with large connected storage areas. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet than in the passenger seat.

Staying Safe and Comfortable: Comfort should be a priority regardless of how you choose to travel with your pets. Just as it’s important for your seat to be comfortable on long road trips, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too (by seat we mean seating area). Usually your pets favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick to quickly put them at ease. If you don’t mind spending the extra money, there are many different pet travel seats available that you can buy which are designed with your pets safety and comfort in mind.

More than likely, you’ve got a first aid kit in your home in case something happens to someone in your family. And, since all areas are susceptible to disasters, you hopefully may even have a disaster kit prepared if the need arises. At the very least, you have the makings of one in your medicine cabinet: band aids, gauze, hydrogen peroxide, etc. But what about for your pet? Do you have all the supplies that you need in case your pet has some kind of trauma or accident? If not, you’ve come to the right place as we are going to outline exactly what you need to put together for Fido & Fluffy’s First Aid Kit.

The Staples

Each pet is different, so there isn’t a “perfect” standard kit that will meet all the needs of your particular little companion. However, the following items will provide a good foundation for you to start your kit. Don’t forget to obtain two of everything to keep one at home and one in your vehicle for use when traveling with your pet.

- A container large enough to hold of all of these items. It should open and close easily but be secure and water-resistant if at all possible.

- A list of phone numbers including your regular vet, emergency vet, animal control, and animal poison control numbers. It’s best to have these pre-programmed in your cell phone as well.

- A muzzle is a good idea for pets that are very injured/afraid – even well-trained pets may bite in these situations, even if they never showed any kind of aggressive behavior in the past.

- Leash

- Extra towels, wash cloths and a blanket

- Ice and hot packs wrapped in a cloth can cool down skin after a burn or keep a pet warm if hypothermic

- Scissors to cut masses that are matted in fur or freeing her from entanglements.

- Tweezers to remove splinters, or other foreign materials from wounds.

- Tick remover tool

- Toenail trimmer

- QuikClot (or a similar product) to stop bleeding.

- Gauze for bandaging or to help stop bleeding.

- Syringe or large eye dropper to flush out wounds or administer fluids by mouth.

- Small bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide

- Antiseptic wash or wipes

- Ear wash

- Sterile eye wash

- Antibiotic ointment

- Syrup of ipecac to induce vomiting in the event of poisoning.

- Latex or plastic exam gloves in case the situation gets messy.

- Pet first aid book – These items will not be of any use to you if you don’t know how to properly use them. Read up and keep this in the kit for quick reference in the event of an emergency.

Additional Items

Depending on your pet, you may need to include more items to complete the kit. If your pet takes medication, be sure to include a few days of the prescription. Is your pet extremely active and takes frequent hikes or outdoor excursions? It’s probably a good idea to include something to create a splint (tongue depressor, 12-inch ruler, or thick magazine). Ask your veterinarian for help in customizing a kit that’s perfect for your dog.

Go the Extra Mile

Now that you’ve got your kit built, why not take it one step further and attend a pet first aid and CPR class? Pets obviously need different care and handling than their humans. Check with your veterinarian, community college, or local Red Cross about the availability of classes in your area. Your four-legged family member will definitely appreciate it. The Trips with Pets Blog has even more safety tips and information, including how to keep your pets safe during disasters. And for all of your pet travel needs, don’t forget to check out Trips with Pets.

Pet Safety While Traveling

Pets are like children. They know nothing. We have to train them to do all things, and riding in the car is no exception. Looking after their security is a must. However, you should not take them on a journey unless you are fully prepared for car safety. You can purchase a pet booster seat, or pet seat that will ensure your safety and your pet’s safety while traveling.

Things You Need To Know In Order To Assure Your Pet’s Safety

You must consider the climate and the temperature before you travel with your pet. The car should have adequate air supply and never leave your pet alone in the car unattended. Be aware of what your pet is wearing. Do not overdress your pet for a long journey. Make sure you have plenty of water as you travel and make frequent stops for your pet to potty.

Traveling with your pet can be fun and enjoyable with the right equipment. Safety is number one and a Pet Booster Seat will ensure that you will be driving and not worrying about your beloved companion. As much as you love your pet, you will want to invest in a pet booster seat, so you will travel in style and more importantly travel safe!

Always be aware of others that are around you and your pet. Never let a stranger try to touch your pet especially in a car. Your pet’s senses are already heighten being in a new place traveling, and a stranger could easily be bit. You have to focus on the safety of other and your pet in a new location. Bring along a familiar toy or blanket with your pet to comfort them during their trip. Pets are much like children and their needs are much the same. Traveling can be fun as long as your pet is safe.
