How do I travel with Fluffy?

Question by comfortably numb: How do I travel with Fluffy?
I am going to be going away over the spring and summer and it will be necessary to take my 6 year old cat w/ me, the car ride will be about 4-5 hours. Should I keep him in a pet carrier, or let him just sit in the passenger seat? What about him eating and going to the bathroom, can he hold it that long if he is in a carrier? Any tips are very much appreciated!

Keep him in the carrier for your safety and his. Do not feed him before traveling. Keep a litter pan in the car and if you stop for lunch/dinner for more then 1/2 hr, then let him out to stretch, use the pan and give him a small meal or drink of water.

I show cats and they are fine travelling for 4-5 hrs to a show without eating. They eat when we get to the show.

Question by Peek-A-Poo: My dog loves me but doesn’t like to go in the car he runs and hides when he hears my keys.?
My husband and I travel alot and our dog doesn’t like the car. We take very good care of him, love on him but he is a homebody. He is a small peek-a-poo and when we got him he had been in a kennel alone for 6 week because he was the last to go. We got him at 3 months, his health was not the best. After several trips to the vet he is in good health, and seems to have forgotten his earlier days.(we think) He is now 8 months old, and he trusts us with most everything other than car riding. He is secure in a dog seat, lots of breaks. We started out slow with the rides and didn’t just take him to the vet, we also just short rides, parks, and pet stores. 95% of the time we take him with us, but he is not happy about it. He shakes and will ignor me when I talk to him, I can’t seem to convince him that I will not let anything bad happen to him. We love him very much and this just pains me, I hate it when he is sad. Can someone give us some advice? Thank you Jim & Sharon

Question by Drestothrill: I have a dog handbag – can it be used to travel in the car?
I have a handbag where my dog can sit in while i walk and she can come with me wherever i go. Can I put the handbag on the car seat and fasten it in with the belt? kind of like a vet box thing…would that be safe?

      Thanks

You could do this, but a hard shell one strapped to the seatbelt would be safer in a crash to protect the dog more.

Help appreciated with airline travel with a pet?

Question by kygirlflgirl: Help appreciated with airline travel with a pet?
I know this is a bit of a no-no…. I have a new kitten/cat that is soooo easy going. (He will even let you give him a bath without a fight) Anyhow, he is going to travel on a 1 segment, 2 hour plane ride with me. When I asked the airline about taking kitty for my carry on, they wanted $ 90.00 ONE WAY or $ 180.00 round trip. At this price, I can get him his own seat, for it cost me on $ 20.00 more for my ticket that gets a snack/drink and a seat with a view other than people’s feet.
I know this is awful… I just can’t afford this extra $ and I will be gone a month, so I cant trust his care that long to a neighbor. Anyhow, I have strongly considering being a “kitty smugler”. I was going to go to the vet and get something to help keep him calm. (he never Meows, so no worries there)
Now the question… When going thru security and they check your ticket going through security, do they check your pets ticket? Obviously, then I would be busted.
        Any advise is much appreciated

The pet policy depends on the airline company. Some airlines will let you take your pets on without charging, or for cheaper than $ 90, so shop around at other airlines and see what their pet policies are.
