Q&A: I want to start my own pet store?

Question by KnotsnSuch: I want to start my own pet store?
Hi everyone! I have a really good idea for a pet store. Here is what will make it unique:
-Will NOT sell live animals other than fish, mice and rats (snakes gotta eat too!), and some parrots. The mice and rats will be bred by me, mainly as feeders, but not inbred, so they can be bought as pets. And of course I’ll socialize them as babies, I wouldn’t be able to not! Also, the parrots I want to sell are budgies, cockatiels, and perhaps mini macaws. I’m not sure. But they will be bred by me in my home and the cockatiels and other birds will be hand fed by me (not going to sell a ton, just have one or 2 breeding pairs for each type of bird) and the babies will be well socialized.
-I want to set up pet adoption days with the humane society. So they bring in some dogs and/or cats that need homes, and people can come to my store to adopt them! I have seen this at petsmarts and stuff.
-Because I’m not going to have lots of animals (and none from pet mills), I am going to have a directory of breeders in the area for all kinds of animals. That way, people will have an easy resource to find reliable breeders for the pet they want.
-I am also going to have a self-serve dog wash. They are popular to have at car washes, and cheaper than having the dog professionally groomed.
-Also, I will have an agreement with people that do buy the pets I have, if they can not take care of the animal anymore within a year of purchase, I will take the animal back, to help keep pet shelters from overflowing even more.
-I will carry a HUGE selection of supplies and food for all kinds of pets. Reptiles, fish, small pets, dogs, cats, birds, maybe even horses (still pondering that…)
-And many people are worried about their pets safety with toys. I will do my best to provide only safe products for pets.

My second question is, what are some specific brands or products you would like to see in a pet supply store?

Thanks!
I have owned rats, mice, and I am on my 4th bird. And they have all been healthy and well taken care of, so my pets at the store will be also. Plus, I’ll have help with some of the running of the store (mainly from my mom, who would love to work there)
True they can be found in shelters, but, a shelter isn’t likely to adopt out a rat or mouse that is going to be fed to someone’s snake, are they?
Second, many of the parrots in rescues have “emotional baggage” and may have health, temperment, or other problems. Not everyone has the experience (or want) to take those kinds of birds on. Therefore, I will offer a few sweet, socialized, young birds that I breed myself and will only be sent to good homes. Plus, I have the 1 year return policy.

Question by Scooter_5 days_: Pet Owners. What do you think of the first ever Pet Airlines? Details inside->?
Paws up: All-pet airline hits skies

NEW YORK – One trip for their Jack Russell terrier in a plane’s cargo hold was enough to convince Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel that owners needed a better option to get their pets from one city to another.

On Tuesday, the first flight for the husband-and-wife team’s Pet Airways, the first-ever all-pet airline, took off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, N.Y.

All commercial airlines allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the cabin. Others must travel as checked bags or in the cargo hold — a dark and sometimes dangerous place where temperatures can vary wildly.

Binder and Wiesel used their consulting backgrounds and business savvy to start Pet Airways in 2005. The last four years have been spent designing their fleet of five planes according to new four-legged requirements, dealing with FAA regulations and setting up airport schedules.

The two say they’re overwhelmed with the response. Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months.

Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities — New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $ 250 one-way fare is comparable to pet fees at the largest U.S. airlines.

For owners the big difference is service. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a Suburban Air Freight plane, retooled and lined with carriers in place of seats. Pets (about 50 on each flight) will be escorted to the plane by attendants that will check on the animals every 15 minutes during flight. The pets are also given pre-boarding walks and bathroom breaks. And at each of the five airports it serves, the company has created a “Pet Lounge” for future fliers to wait and sniff before flights.

The company will operate out of smaller, regional airports in the five launch cities, which will mean an extra trip for most owners dropping off their pets if they are flying too. Stops in cities along the way means the pets will take longer to reach a destination than their owners.

A trip from New York to Los Angeles, for example, will take about 24 hours. On that route, pets will stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break, play time, dinner, and bunk for the night before finishing the trip the next day.
