When Abby came to live with us last year, she was terrified of riding in the car and would shake uncontrollably. Over the past year, she has slowly learned to relax and enjoy the ride, especially if it ends at the dog park. (Please note that Abby is secured by a tether from her harness to the seat belt insertion point. It has since been shortened so that she can’t come up between the front seats.) Abby is a 3 yr old wire fox terrier, adopted from American Fox Terrier Rescue at age 2. Music by Amadou & Mariam. Recorded on a Flip SlideHD on December 30, 2010 (on the way to the pet store).

Question by jennifer s: Any rules for my German Shepherd dog riding in the car?
Someome (that I really despise) was getting on me the other day about my German Shepherd dog riding in the passenger seat of my car. They were saying that the police could give me a ticket if he wasn’t in the backseat. I have a fairly small car (a hyundai sonata) and a very large dog, so he cannot sit in the backseat. The seat in the back is a bench seat, and his paws slide off causing him to fall on the floor. The passenger seat is the only seat large enough to accomodate him safely and comfortably. He NEVER gets in the way of my driving, and I am always very cautious when driving with him. Can I really get a citation for this?
Please don’t recommend those “doggy seatbelts.” I’ve looked into those, and they are a joke.
Please don’t recommend those “doggy seatbelts.” I’ve looked into those, and they are a joke.
I live in Florida… if that helps.
My dog always has a leash on in the car in case I need to grab him, but I have never actually had to. He’s really well behaved in the car.

A 9 month old English Cocker Spaniel displayed a variety of stress signs while riding in the car – including: blinking, panting (it was cold), whining, pacing and quivering. When in the car, this dog’s stress is triggered by a combination of stimuli including: – stopping the car / parking – turning the car off / turning the key in the ignition – releasing the safety belt – opening the front car door – standing outside the car – opening the back door (to where the dog sits attached to a clip in the seat belt via an extension and harness) We are using systematic desensitisation with positive reinforcement for good behaviour to help relieve some of her stress. The owner and trainer (Charlotte Wagner) worked with each aspect of the anxiety by allowing the dog human interaction, food reward, and the next step of the behaviour sequence when she displayed self control and stopped whining. These steps are designed for the owner to use when the dog has to be in the car. When not needing to transport her pet the owner is instructed to feed the dog a Kong in the car while it is stationary, and having all activities around the car be super positive to create a good association to the car rather than a negative one. If you have a dog who is scared of the car, anxious, or stressed out while driving around consider the following: – Reward / treat your dog to a Kong when the car is stationary – Reward / treat your dog to a Kong while driving around the block – Once the dog is comfterable …

DJ’s car face

DJ loves the car. Very rarely, it goes to the vet. Far more often, it goes to the park, or to visit a friend, or to go hiking. She likes to be right up in front, but both dogs wear seat-belted harnesses. We made her strap as long as possible. She can’t go through the windshield in an impact, or climb in front to impede driving, but she can stand, balanced like a surfer, in the middle of the back seat and check out the other cars, the dogs with their heads out the windows, and she can help lead the way to the dog park. She lets us know if a red light is taking too long to change, and occasionally urges us on with cheek-licks or elbow-nudges.

Her car face is unlike any other face, except perhaps her park face. It’s open and relaxed and anticipatory.

Not so much for poor Zoe, who came to us terrified of the car, but who has come to jump in and be happy to go where it’s going. But still, she tends to lie down or crouch or lean against the back seat. While DJ has to be right in front, Zoe has to be safely against the upholstery. She whines about 60% of the time, off and on, and really just wants to get to the park and get out of the car, onto stable ground.

Maisy to the Kennel

Maisy hates going and doesn’t like riding in the car either. Can ya tell? On the way to NYC I took a couple pictures in the car which I almost never do. Didn’t realize this until after I went to the Lee Friedlander show America by Car at the Whitney.

Want to go for a ride? Those six little words are often music to a dog’s ears. Whether you’re bringing them to the local dog park or to visit friends and family, many dogs enjoy a road trip. You probably ensure that you and your family are buckled up before you go, but are you also keeping your pet safe when they are riding in the car with you?

Trips with Pets, the leading authority on pet travel and pet friendly hotels, conducted a poll to find out how many pet owners are securing their furry companions while on the road. 53% of the 765 respondents reported taking proper safety precautions, which is up from just 44% only two years ago. Many states now have pending legislation regarding the use of pet restraints in a vehicle, so if you currently have your dog or cat loose in your car, it’s time to consider using one of the following methods:

Vehicle Pet Barrier: This was the most popular pet travel restraint in the survey, cited to be used by 41% of pet owner respondents. These barriers are used in the cargo area of the vehicle, keeping your pet safely away from you and your passengers, and more importantly, away from the windshield in the event of an accident.

Pet Travel Crate: 32% of pet owners in the poll reported putting their pet in a travel crate or carrier while inside the car. Make sure it’s well-ventilated and large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around in. There are a variety of wire, mesh, hard plastic and soft-sided carriers available to fit your pet. If you’re buddy hasn’t been familiarized with a crate environment, it will be important to do so prior to heading out.

Pet Safety Belt: Buckle ‘em up like 9% of the people in the survey do. Dog seat belts are made to easily slip onto your existing vehicle seat belt and acts as a harness to keep your pet safely in the seat in case there is a sudden stop or impact. It also keeps pets from distracting drivers.

Pet Car Seat: For smaller pets, pet travel car seats are the perfect answer when you’re on the go, and are a good option for 8% of the survey respondents. Reminiscent of a booster seat, your pet is able to look out and see what is going on while your vehicle’s own safety belt holds it in place. Your pet is secured in the car seat with a lead which is attached on to their harness.

Roaming Free is Not a Good Option: It’s encouraging that owners traveling with their four-legged family members are trying to keep them safe, but 47% of the people who took the survey do not currently secure their pets in the car. Letting your pet have free reign in a vehicle or sit in your lap while driving can have serious consequences. Aside from the obvious implications during a crash, if the scared pet gets free from the car, he could wander out into the road or try to hamper the efforts of rescue workers. And although dogs love to stick their heads out windows, doing so can actually damage their eyes and ears, not to mention put them at risk of falling out. The same also applies to truck beds.

An unrestrained pet can multiply its weight by hundreds or even thousands of pounds during an automobile accident. Some vehicle accident statistics report loose objects, including pets, to be one of the top five reasons for automobile injuries. Don’t put your beloved pet in harm’s way when you take them for a ride.

by marymactavish

If you have a small dog, you know how important it is that they remain safe in the vehicle. Unlike large dogs, small dogs tend to want to be up on consoles and have a harder time keeping balance in the car during rides. A dog car seat can keep your dog safe and happy while riding in the car. With many different options available, it is important to know what the differences are and which car seat is right for your dog.

Many pooches love to ride on the console of an SUV or truck, but many times the surface is too slippery and they become a hazard to themselves and the driver. Buying a dog car seat that is meant for the console of a car can help solve that problem for you. These seats come in many different sizes for smaller dogs and can help keep your dog safe from sudden stops while also keeping them from distracting you while driving. Console car seats usually have a non-skid bottom and a strap that attaches to the console of most vehicles. They also include a harness strap on the inside of the car seat that will keep your pooch in their seat during a big ride.

If your dog prefers to keep their head in the breeze as you drive, there are great booster seats that allow your dog some height without sacrificing the interior of your car. These booster seats attach to the car seat much like a child’s booster seat. You can also get a seatbelt harness that will keep your dog in place so they can’t jump around the car.

Another option is the safety systems that go in the back seat of a car. These allow your dog some mobility while keeping them safe in their car seat if there happens to be a crash. Your dog will be able to see out the window a bit better, too! If you’re looking for a safety system with a car seat, make sure you look for one that has been crash tested. Many dog car seats are convenience items that allow for easy traveling with dogs that explore a bit too much. If you’re looking for a car seat that will protect your dog from a crash, you will want to look carefully at the descriptions of the seats and whether or not they have been safety tested.

Most dogs love to ride in the car, but small dogs sometimes have a hard time getting their footing and tend to jump around the car and slide on leather seats. By giving your dog a comfortable place to rest, you may find that they are a lot less anxious about car rides. Even if your dog loves to be in the car, a car seat can give you the added benefit of less distraction. If you’re concerned about getting into an accident with your dog in the car, look for safety and crash tested dog car seats that are to be used as safety devices and not just convenience. You could end up saving your dog’s life if you happened to be in even a minor crash.

A 9 month old English Cocker Spaniel displayed a variety of stress signs while riding in the car – including: blinking, panting (it was cold), whining, pacing and quivering.

When in the car, this dog’s stress is triggered by a combination of stimuli including:

- stopping the car / parking
- turning the car off / turning the key in the ignition
- releasing the safety belt
- opening the front car door
- standing outside the car
- opening the back door (to where the dog sits attached to a clip in the seat belt via an extension and harness)

We are using systematic desensitisation with positive reinforcement for good behaviour to help relieve some of her stress.

If you have a dog who is scared of the car, anxious, or stressed out while driving around consider the following:
- Reward / treat your dog to a Kong when the car is stationary
- Reward / treat your dog to a Kong while driving around the block
- Once the dog is comfterable make sure to increase the amount of time the dog spends in the car in small increments

Instead of giving the dog a Kong, you can also use a Busy Buddy toy, hide dry food or treats in a blanket in the back of a car, or if using a kennel smear peanut butter or tinned food around the sides of the cage.

If your dog is quite frantic consider crate training it to ease the travel, using a dog gate to keep it restrained, or a buckle attachment to a harness on your dog.

If you travel with your pet make sure it is contained in some manner – for you and those in the car as well as the safety of your pet.

Pet Safety While Traveling

Pets are like children. They know nothing. We have to train them to do all things, and riding in the car is no exception. Looking after their security is a must. However, you should not take them on a journey unless you are fully prepared for car safety. You can purchase a pet booster seat, or pet seat that will ensure your safety and your pet’s safety while traveling.

Things You Need To Know In Order To Assure Your Pet’s Safety

You must consider the climate and the temperature before you travel with your pet. The car should have adequate air supply and never leave your pet alone in the car unattended. Be aware of what your pet is wearing. Do not overdress your pet for a long journey. Make sure you have plenty of water as you travel and make frequent stops for your pet to potty.

Traveling with your pet can be fun and enjoyable with the right equipment. Safety is number one and a Pet Booster Seat will ensure that you will be driving and not worrying about your beloved companion. As much as you love your pet, you will want to invest in a pet booster seat, so you will travel in style and more importantly travel safe!

Always be aware of others that are around you and your pet. Never let a stranger try to touch your pet especially in a car. Your pet’s senses are already heighten being in a new place traveling, and a stranger could easily be bit. You have to focus on the safety of other and your pet in a new location. Bring along a familiar toy or blanket with your pet to comfort them during their trip. Pets are much like children and their needs are much the same. Traveling can be fun as long as your pet is safe.
