Question by John Michael P: Can a dog’s stitches on his stomach (inside) come out from jumping down off of a car’s seat which is 22″ high?
I have an 11 year old dog (60 pound lab/boxer mix, about 22-24 inches high when on all four legs) who had GDV (his stomach flipped) on January 17th of this year. He had emergency surgery within a few hours which seemed to correct it and he seemed to heal just fine. During the surgery they also tacked his stomach to his ribs so that it wouldn’t flip again. Then last night (Feb 28th) his stomach flipped again and luckily we caught it within minutes and surgery was performed again at the Animal ER and so far everything is okay. He’s recovering at our normal vet right now, who is great. My concern is how this could have happened again. Could him jumping in or out of our car’s back seat when taking him to/from the ER & Vet be causing his stomach to become unattached to his ribs before that tissue can form a strong bond? He usually jumps up to the floorboard when getting in (which is about 12 inches high) and I help him by kind of holding his back legs so that he’s not really “jumping”. But when getting out of the car he jumps down right off of the back seat, which is 24 inches high. Now I’m really worried because he jumped from the back seat again this morning when we arrived at the Vet from the ER. One time about 10 days after his first surgery he also jumped onto the spare bed which is about 28 – 30 inches high when we accidentally left the spare bedroom door opened. Could that one jump have done damage, or jumping off of the car’s backseat 3 – 4 times within a few weeks after the surgery? I’m really worried.
i should have mentioned they stitched his skin from the inside out, so no stitches on the outside. so there are those internal stitches as well as the stitches that tacked his stomach to his ribs to help prevent further stomach flips. i tried not to let him jump down from the car’s back seat this morning but he did before i could hold him. that’s what i’m most worried about since it was a jump down from about 24 inches. i’ll make certain to not open the car door from the outside going forward until i’m holding him in my arms from inside the car. Thanks so much for the responses so far! i hope he’s okay. :( i can ask the ER tonight if they can do another xray to make sure it’s still tacked maybe?

This is something to ask your vet who did it…..you are so lucky you caught in time and such a worry for you…my GSD had the same at 2 years old and I have to say had the stomach tacked and after 5 more near misses I eventually lost her at 7years old
